In the latest trade negotiations with Canada, Howard Lutnick took the lead for the United States. So Canada now finds itself staring at terms intrusive enough to raise real questions about its sovereignty — and all from a man who recently testified under oath that he took his entire family to Jeffrey Epstein’s island. The honesty is refreshing. The judgment is another matter.
Fox News may not have highlighted that testimony. The connection between Fox and the administration is close; people move back and forth with remarkable ease. But their viewers may not know. They seem deeply interested in Epstein — until the moment a politician they favor appears in photographs or footage alongside him. Then the curiosity fades.
It is difficult to imagine a serious country placing another’s sovereignty in question while sending Howard Lutnick as its representative. Most countries do not have Fox News. Most countries would not treat this as normal.
The problem is not merely the demands.
It is who is making them.
