In another instant classic between Tuscarora and Heritage, the Pride escaped with a 68–65 overtime victory. Heritage is in the middle of the finest season in school history, yet a familiar phenomenon had begun to appear: success, once achieved, was quietly treated as permanent. The crowds had thinned, as if excellence were now the baseline rather than the occasion.
So someone intervened. A donor purchased 500 tickets for Heritage students, and just like that the gym returned to life. The timing proved fortunate. Tuscarora fans travel well, and Tuscarora players travel even better.
Colin Byrd scored 34 points in what may have been his final rivalry appearance. After Heritage raced to a 19–4 lead, Byrd hit a half-court three at the first-quarter buzzer to pull Tuscarora within 19–10. From there he seemed everywhere at once — threes from distance, finishes in traffic, rebounds above the crowd — and celebrations that spread energy through the building as surely as the ball through the net.
Heritage, however, has its own habit of producing unlikely heroes. Jordan Garland, the 6’4” slasher who sometimes lives in the shadow of the guard duo Masyn Miller and Dylan Williams, again stepped forward in a spotlight matchup with a team-high 22 points. Good teams have scorers. Memorable teams have someone who answers when the moment asks.
The first ending came when Masyn Miller followed his own missed free throw with a put-back while being fouled. The gym erupted. Heritage supporters rushed the court, convinced the game was over — and the crowd itself was assessed a technical foul. Byrd calmly made both free throws with little time remaining, and the game improbably continued in overtime.
The students had been asked to come, and they came loudly enough to change the game.
Overtime, fortunately, resolved matters. Garland hit a three to put Heritage ahead for good, then added two composed free throws in the final seconds. This time the horn settled it.
Under the bright lights and constant noise, with a senior star playing his last rivalry game and a role player answering the moment, the gym did not feel like preparation for something larger.
For a few hours, it was the larger thing.
For a few hours, it was the entire season. Thanks for reading! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.
